由於「全美編劇協會」(W.G.A.)與美國電影製片廠、電視網之間的勞資紛 爭持續蔓延的情況下，2008年的金球獎首度取消了星光閃閃的頒獎典禮，改由「好萊塢外籍記者協會」(H.F.P.A.)以記者招待會的方式於原訂的頒獎 地點--比佛利山莊的希爾頓大飯店宣布得獎名單，整個得獎記者會進行約莫半小時結束。

「贖罪」、「險路勿近」、「潛水鐘與蝴蝶」、「瘋狂 理髮師:倫敦首席惡魔剃刀手」等四部片各得兩項大獎。綺拉奈特莉主演的「贖罪」贏得戲劇類最佳影片獎與最佳原創電影音樂獎，柯恩兄弟執導的「險路勿近」一 片則由飾演殺手的賈維爾巴丹贏得最佳男配角獎，兄弟倆抱回最佳劇本獎，根據感人暢銷小說改編的電影「潛水鐘與蝴蝶」擊敗2007年坎城影展得獎片「4月3 週又2天」與台灣的「色戒」搶下最佳外語片獎，還有由朱利安納史貝爾所獲得的最佳導演獎，改編自百老匯音樂劇的電影「瘋狂理髮師:倫敦首席惡魔剃刀手」贏 得喜劇或音樂類最佳影片獎，強尼戴普則是拿下喜劇與音樂類最佳男主角獎。戲劇類男、女主角則是分別由主演「黑金企業」的丹尼爾戴路易斯以及在「玫瑰人生」 中飾演法國傳奇女藝人Edith Piaf的女星瑪莉詠克蒂拉獲得。

原訂頒發給史蒂芬史匹柏的卓越貢獻特別獎The Cecil B. DeMille Award順延至2009年頒發。
